Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP)

The Summer Research Opportunities Program at Ohio State is designed to help minority undergraduates explore opportunities for graduate study and academic careers. SROP participants work with a faculty sponsor on a project of mutual interest, with the intention of developing the kind of student-professor relationship that is crucial to success in graduate school. SROP activities include workshops on research skills and seminars on topics related to graduate education and career development. At the end of the summer program, participants present their research at the campus summary conference. In addition, participants are expected to attend the annual CIC-SROP conference. The CIC is the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), the consortium of the Big Ten universities and the University of Chicago.

Participants receive a stipend of $3000, paid in three installments, plus $1000 toward their living expenses. Non-Ohio State students will have their housing in the residence hall and travel to and from Ohio State (one round trip) paid for by the program. Faculty sponsors are given a research allowance to be used in support of each student's SROP research project.

For additional information, contact the Diversity Initiatives and Recruitment Office staff at srop@osu.edu or 614-247-6377.

Eligibility
Minority undergraduates who are U.S. citizens and meet the criteria listed in the qualifications section below are eligible to participate in the program. The selection process targets groups under-represented in graduate education. Priority is given to those students who have not participated in the SROP program previously.

Applicants must have completed at least one-third of the credit hours required for their undergraduate major, exclusive of the General Education Curriculum (GEC) requirement, by June of the application year. They also must have at least two quarters of enrollment remaining after the program ends and a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above at the time of application.

Applications for Summer 2010 will be accepted November 1, 2009 until February 10, 2010.
