Student Achievement in Research and Scholarship (STARS)
STARS is a state-wide mentoring program that helps attract Ohio's minority
undergraduates to Ohio's graduate schools. The program offers the opportunity
to conduct research under the guidance of a faculty mentor, research awards,
travel scholarships to attend academic conferences, and participation in campus-based
enrichment activities. Students have access to academic workshops and seminars
designed to prepare them for application to graduate school and to take the
Graduate Record Exam (GRE).
Eligibility: The program targets African-American, Latino, and American
Indian students who are undergraduates enrolled in an Ohio university, U.S.
citizens, and who are underrepresented in their fields of study.
Qualifications: Priority is given to students with sophomore and junior
standing. Seniors will also be considered if they will be available for a
full year of mentoring. Eligible students have a minimum 3.0 GPA and must
express some interest in conducting independent research with a faculty mentor
and in pursuing a doctoral degree and an academic career.
Undergraduate Research Awards: STARS students may compete for undergraduate
research grants. These awards are for a maximum of $1,200 per academic year
(maximum of $400 per quarter).
