WORKSHOP SERIES

The Graduate School’s Fall 2021 workshop series, Preparing Future Faculty (PFF), focuses on different settings in higher education, ranging from being in a Research-Intensive University to a College setting. The goal is to help graduate students interested in the professoriate learn about the different roles and responsibilities (research, teaching, service) of faculty at the various institutions. The goal is to help you, the graduate student interested in the professoriate, determine what institution(s) are the best fit.

Workshop 1

DOING WHAT YOU LOVE AND LOVE WHAT YOU ARE DOING: A JOURNEY INTO HIGHER EDUCATION

When: October 5th, 2021 3:00PM-4:00PM EST

More specifically, this one-hour workshop is for doctoral students interested in the professoriate and learning more about working at a small university. Dr Jew will share her journey as a tenured full professor and how she chose the institution and how the teaching, research, and service requirements were the right fit for her. She will provide information about the teaching, research and service expectations when working at a small university. Her presentation will not be specific to her specialization, but will more broadly address what to expect when working at a small university. She will dedicate the last 10-15 minutes to student questions.

Dr. Cynthia Jew

Professor and full-time faculty member in the Counselor Education Department in the Graduate School of Education at California Lutheran University.

Her most recent work is in the field of Cultural Proficiency in Higher Education, specifically, advocating for individuals with disabilities.

STEPS TO BECOMING A NEW FACULTY MEMBER

When: October 7th, 2021 3:00PM-4:00PM EST

This workshop is for graduate students interested in the professoriate. It builds on the “Job Search Strategies for the Professoriate” held last summer. However, students interested in hearing first-hand what the transition from graduate school to higher education might be like, please join us for an informative presentation. All graduate students interested in pursuing a professoriate career should attend this workshop

LESSONS LEARNED ABOUT PURSUING A FACULTY CAREER IN AN ONLINE REMOTE INSTITUTION

When: October 12th, 2021 3:00PM-4:00PM EST

Dr Rebecca Boyle will share her experience working as a faculty member in an online remote university setting. She has the experience of having worked as a faculty member at a brick-and-mortar institution and will provide insight as to the differences in teaching, and to engage with students when working in an online remote environment, to help students succeed in their studies and graduation. She will address the pros and cons of working as an online faculty member.

FROM FIRST GENERATION COLLEGE STUDENT TO TENURED PROFESSOR: BUILDING A CAREER AT COMMUNITY COLLEGE

When: October 19th, 2021 3:00PM-4:00PM EST

Join Mike Piero, Ph.D., Professor of English, as he describes his journey from being a first-generation college student to becoming one of the youngest tenured professors at the largest community college in Ohio, Cuyahoga Community College. Dr. Piero will share about the ins and outs of his work as an English professor at a community college, what this career path looked like, how he balances his teaching load with scholarly research, how to stand out to a community college hiring committee, shared governance, quality of life considerations, and more. He will be available for questions following the presentation.

FACULTY JOB SEARCH IMMIGRATION INFORMATION SESSION: H-1B WORK VISA AND PERMANENT RESIDENCY

When: November 4th, 2021 3:00PM-4:30PM EST

Eligibility requirements and overview of H-1B work visas (i.e. costs, time limit, dual intent)
H-1B timelines for application and approval including general steps (PWD, LCA, submission to USCIS)
OPT filling the gap after graduation and related considerations

The three steps for most cases (Labor Certification, I-140, I-485)
