The Ohio State University is a leading public, land grant, research, urban, community-engaged institution that sees diversity and inclusion as inextricably tied to its missions of access and academic excellence. In alignment with these missions, the Patrick S. Osmer Fellowship recognizes talented, newly admitted graduate students who previously participated in the Big Ten Academic Alliance Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP); have overcome educational, economic, or personal obstacles to Graduate School; and embody OSU’s Shared Values.

The Patrick S. Osmer Fellowship is a two-year fellowship award, in which the first year of fellowship support is administered in the student’s first year of graduate study, while the second year is retained until the student’s final year of study to support the student while completing their dissertation. 

Patrick S. Osmer Fellowship Eligibility B.2

The Patrick S. Osmer Fellowship will recognize and allow graduate programs to nominate newly admitted graduate students who meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Entering a terminal degree program, as outlined in Section 2.1 of the Fellowship Guidelines
  • Minimum undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.00.
  • U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or eligible for DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) status.
  • Previous participant in the Big Ten Academic Alliance Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP) at any Big Ten institution.
  • Have overcome an educational, economic, and/or personal challenge to access Graduate School. Examples of challenges include being a first-generation student, having financial need, being a caretaker, returning after a long absence, or attending an undergraduate university with limited research experience opportunities.
  • Possess skills or experiences that exemplify one or more of Ohio State’s Shared Values
  • Possess skills and experiences that have prepared the nominee for academic success, thus advancing the Graduate School’s educational mission.
  • Possess skills and experiences that have prepared the nominee to contribute intellectually to the University’s research, scholarship, and engagement missions.

Patrick S. Osmer Fellowship Nomination Process B.3

Incoming graduate students cannot directly apply for the Patrick S. Osmer Fellowship.  Eligible candidates must be nominated by graduate programs.  Graduate programs may nominate any student who meets the above eligibility criteria, and there is no limit to the number of nominations a program can submit for the Osmer Fellowship.  Programs must commit to providing support for intervening years when nominating candidates for the two-year Patrick S. Osmer Fellowship. 

For the Patrick S. Osmer Fellowship, nominating graduate programs  must submit a complete nomination packet for the nominee. Materials required for Osmer Fellowship nomination aligns with UF nomination materials, as described in Section 7.1.   

Required Nomination Materials (combined into one single PDF document):

  • The graduate program’s signed justification statement
  • The nominee’s statement of purpose from their admission application 
  • The nominee’s resumé/curriculum vitae from their admission application
  • Three letters of recommendation from their admission application

All Osmer Fellowship nominations must be submitted in GradAwards by the deadline indicated on the Fellowship Calendar.

Patrick S. Osmer Fellowship Evaluation Process B.4

The Patrick S. Osmer Fellowship nominations are reviewed by at least three members of the Graduate Faculty. Graduate School leadership review faculty scores and recommendations and select fellowship recipients. 

In addition to screening that the candidates meet the eligibility criteria for nomination, including previous participation in SROP, the members of the review team evaluate nominees based on the scoring criteria outlined in the Graduate Access Fellowship rubric.

Petitions for Osmer nominations will not be accepted.

Patrick S. Osmer Fellowships may not be reallocated.
