WORKSHOP SERIES

The Graduate School’s Spring 2022 workshop series, Preparing Future Faculty (PFF), is a continuation of our Fall 2021 workshop series. These workshops have been focusing on different settings in higher education, ranging from being in a Research-Intensive University to a College setting. The goal is to help graduate students interested in the professoriate to gain a better understanding of the different roles and responsibilities faculty members have in these settings. Gaining a better understanding of these different settings can help graduate students narrow down what settings are the best fit for them.

Workshop 1

THE PATHWAY, REWARDS, AND CHALLENGES OF PREPARING A DIVERSE STEM WORKFORCE AT AN HISTORICAL BLACK COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY (HBCU)

When: February 17th, 2022 3:00PM-4:00PM EST

Research, innovation, and teaching at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have a major impact on diversifying the STEM workforce. In this seminar, I will discuss my journey to becoming a faculty member at an HBCU. Further, I will discuss the development of my scholarship (Bioinspired Polymer Engineering lab), service and teaching. Finally, the impact of both research and entrepreneurship learning (via NSF I-Corps) on engineering students will be discussed.

Dr. Jerald Dumas

Associate Professor and Chair

Jerald Dumas, is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering at Hampton University. His research focuses on the development of bioinspired polymeric materials for tissue engineering, disease detection, and equipment performance. Dr. Dumas graduated from Auburn University with a B.S. in chemical engineering and received his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Vanderbilt University. He teaches junior level chemical engineering courses, while serving as PI and Co-PI on several grants.

I AM AN EDUCATOR WHO DOES RESEARCH:
MY 35 YEAR LIFE IN THE R1

When: February 24th, 2022 3:00PM-4:00PM EST

In this talk I will review my career at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, from postdoctoral scholar to full professor, to center director. I will discuss the importance of teaching, research, research funding, and service for Black faculty within the context of racial networking, John Henryism, and work-family balance. We have the option of defining "butterflies" as anxiety or excitement. Either way, they are normal reactions to the inevitable uncertainty of the unknown. Striving is courageous and there is no such thing as failure.
