Graduate Students participate in an array of opportunities to further their research, creative endeavors, and careers at Ohio State.
Here are some of the recent ways that OSU Grad Students have received funding through grants and other sources to help support those activities.
Valentina Posada
Valentina Posada recently received a NIH Diversity Supplement to explore how different types of melanin influence melanoma development. Her efforts from this award have already contributed to a key publication in the field showing that melanin may be detrimental to the cells which manufacture pigment (melanocytes). Valentina's research will have important implications for how we assess and mitigate skin cancer risk. Publication in the National Library of Medicine
Valentina is currently a third-year graduate student in the Department of Molecular Genetics.
Noor Murteza
"Fractals: The Patterns in Nature" has been awarded $10,000 grant from the Stand-Up Shakespeare fund. The Patterns in Nature project aims to engage a broad range of stakeholders, including casual public park visitors, local artists, school age students, public school teachers, undergraduate design students and committed art enthusiasts.

Nathaniel Heiden
Nathaniel Heiden is a Presidential Fellow and Ph.D. candidate in Plant Pathology. He serves as the Science Director of LEVO International, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving food security by building hydroponics farming systems in the U.S. and Haiti. LEVO was recently awarded an $85,000 grant from the Connecticut Department of Agriculture to develop an organic fertilizer for hydroponics systems.

Adam Barstow
Adam Barstow is a recipient of the National Health Service Corps Scholarship. The National Health Service Corps Scholarship Program awards complete tuition scholarships to students pursuing eligible primary care health professions training. In return, scholars commit to provide primary care health services in Health Professional Shortage Areas.
Dustin Horton
Dustin received a research grant from NASA Applied Sciences Program / NASA Wildland Fire Management Program to investigate the use of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) for wildfire risk assessment and monitoring.
Dustin is a graduate student in the Electrical and Computer Engineering program.
Andrew Wagner
Dr. Andrew Wagner, who defended and passed his dissertation in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences' HRS PhD program at the beginning of this year, was recently awarded an NIH K99/R00 by the National Institute of Deafness and other Communication Disorders (NIDCD). His 4-year grant is entitled: “Investigating subthreshold vestibular stimulation as a strategy for rehabilitation in individuals with bilateral vestibular hypofunction”. The NIDCD states that they use this “K99/R00 NIH Pathway to Independence Award to support outstanding senior postdoctoral investigators in NIDCD research areas who are ready to complete their transition to become independent investigators.”
Dustin Nguyen
Last year Dustin was awarded the NASA FINESST fellowship of more than $90,000 in funding that covers fall '22 to graduation in spr '24. The funding supports Dustin for approximately 2 years to carry out the proposed research project. It also allows me to closely collaborate with NASA scientists on projects that fit within the scope of my proposal.

Evan Brandao
Evan Brandao was recently awarded two scholarships by the Ohio State University Center for Real Estate Scholarship Committee and the Ohio Association of Realtors.
Evan is a graduate student in the Master of City and Regional Planning program.
