Graduate Students Participate in Autumn 2023 Engaged Scholarship Symposium

On Nov. 1, the Office of Outreach and Engagement held the Autumn 2023 Engaged Scholarship Symposium. The event began with a graduate student poster competition, where students had five minutes to present their research topic to two judges. Approximately 30 students participated in the competition, covering topics ranging from heat exchange technology for community farmers to universal design for students with disabilities participating in international travel programs.

During the poster competition, three graduate student posters were chosen as awardees.

  • First prize: Health Starts at Home: Summer Wellness Program at the Linden Fresh Market; by Annie Chen, Amardeep Mudhar, Lahari Ramagiri and Lin Abigail Tan, College of Medicine
  • Second prize: Pet Wellness Outreach: A Harm Reduction Model; by Carla Sutton, College of Social Work
  • Third prize: Shallow Geothermal Heat Exchangers: Sustainable Low-Cost Season Extension for Community Farmers; by Jaden Tatum, College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences

After the poster competition, the symposium featured a full day of panelists speaking on various topics. A highlight of the presentations was Abby Mills, from the College of Education and Human Ecology, presenting on her project that received an Outreach and Engagement Grant. Abby’s project connected the Dennis Learning Center and the Metro High School to investigate support for their existing Senior Communication program and ways to engage students more effectively.

The Graduate School is proud of all of these students and is especially excited to see the impact of both Abby Mills and Jaden Tatum who are previous recipients of graduate-level awards. Jaden received an Early Offer Inclusive Excellence award and in 2019 received a University Fellowship. Abby Mills is a 2019 recipient of a Distinguished University Fellowship. These awards are provided to support the work of graduate students at the highest level and their participation in the Engaged Scholarship Symposium highlights their continued effort to develop outstanding portfolios during their time at Ohio State.
