Presenter: Betsy Rolland, Associate Director of Team Science, Sage Bionetworks

About the series: This series of workshops will focus on preparing post-doctoral researchers to both participate in and lead interdisciplinary research teams. In Session 1, the instructor will define Interdisciplinary Research (IDR) and Team Science (TS) and discuss the opportunities and challenges of participating in IDR and TS throughout the research career trajectory. In Session 2, Betsy will present practical strategies for being an effective team member, including how to be a good collaborator and how to evaluate offers of collaboration to ensure the proposed projects fit with the participant’s career goals. In Session 3, substantial time will be spent on understanding how to assemble an effective science team. Topics include developing a mission and vision for one’s own team/lab, onboarding team members, developing an environment of psychological safety, inviting collaborators to participate in collaborative projects, and identifying and assessing team practices. Session 4 will discuss leading effective teams, including how to organize and facilitate meetings, developing an authorship plan, and building accountability into collaborative projects. Participants will also learn how to develop a team collaboration plan that can serve as a template for future grant proposal multi-PI plans. The sessions will be a mix of short didactic and interactive activities, with the goal of increasing participants’ knowledge of and comfort with engaging in IDR and TS.

About the Speaker: Betsy Rolland is the Associate Director of Team Science at Sage Bionetworks. Prior to joining Sage Bionetworks, Betsy was the Director of Team Science & Research Development at the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Carbone Cancer Center and Institute for Clinical and Translational Research where she built infrastructure to support team science.
