ENGIE-Axium Scholarships Overview Section E.1
ENGIE-Axium scholarships are one-time, $5,000 scholarship payments designed to recruit or retain academically strong candidates for admission into Ohio State’s graduate programs with a particular focus in the research areas aligned with the sustainability definition included in Section 6.1.
The Graduate School determines the number of ENGIE-Axium scholarships each year based on available funds. Scholarships allocated to colleges that are not used in a given academic year will default back to the Graduate School. There are no citizenship requirements for ENGIE-Axium scholarships.
Incentive Recruitment Scholarships Section E.2
ENGIE-Axium Incentive Recruitment Scholarships (EA-IRS) can be used to supplement current recruitment packages for students studying in areas of sustainability to attract the most sought-after students requiring stronger financial incentives to attract them to Ohio State. This incentive can be used at the college’s discretion to supplement the stipend or to provide research and professional development funds specifically for that student. Recruitment incentive scholarships can be combined with other funding that the student has received.
There are two types of EA-IRS scholarships:
- Research Incentive Recruitment Scholarship (EA-RIRS)- $5000 recruitment scholarship; awarded to the department to disburse in support of the awarded student’s research activities during the student’s first two years of study
- Supplemental Incentive Recruitment Scholarship (EA-SIRS)- $5000 recruitment scholarship; awarded to the student directly in their first term
To be eligible for an ENGIE-Axium Incentive Recruitment Scholarship, prospective students must apply to a new graduate program, be admitted pursuant to the standard admissions process, and have a minimum undergraduate cumulative GPA and minimum cumulative GPA from any subsequent degree earned, if applicable, of at least a 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. No GPA petitions are permitted. Students must be enrolled for the semester of the award disbursement and making progress toward the degree.
Curricular Practical Training Scholarships Section E.3
ENGIE-Axium Curricular Practical Training Scholarships are one-time $5000 scholarship payments used to support current students working in areas of energy or sustainability who do not have access to year-round employment or funding opportunities. The scholarship payments are disbursed to student accounts.
Students can be in any year of their program of study and must need bridge funding for a specific academic term (e.g., Summer or Autumn term following awarding). The student must have less than the minimum stipend of funding for the semester. For instance, students may be underfunded (below the minimum monthly stipend) for the semester in which the EA-CPT is requested or request funding for work that is essential to their dissertation or thesis but for which they have no financial support. Total support, including the EA-CPT, cannot exceed the minimum stipend level.
Students receiving partial stipends from associateships or scholarships may be eligible for EA-CPT funding. As an example, EA-CPT nominations can be received to support graduate students who may be attending an under-funded, off-campus experience for a semester or, due to a nine-month Graduate Associate appointment, without funding for a summer semester. Other examples may include a student who has external fellowship support that does not meet the university minimum stipend level for Graduate Associates or a student who does not have summer funding.
To be eligible for an ENGIE-Axium Curricular Practical Training Scholarship, current students must have a cumulative graduate GPA of 3.5. No GPA petitions are permitted. Students must be enrolled for the semester of the award disbursement and making progress toward the degree. Previous EA-CPT awardees are not eligible for a second award.
ENGIE-Axium Scholarship Administrative Processes Section E.4
The Graduate School provides college and IGP leadership with their designated number of ENGIE-Axium scholarships for the recruitment cycle early in the Autumn term. The college/IGP can determine which types of ENGIE-Axium scholarships it would like to award from their total allocations.
- For example, a College with 1 scholarship allocation can decide if it would like to use this allocation as an EA-IRS or EA-CPT scholarship.
- A College with 3 scholarship allocations can decide to use two as EA-IRS scholarships and one as an EA-CPT scholarship. Alternatively, all three could be used as EA-IRS scholarships.
- The allocation reflects the total number of scholarship allocations. The College/IGP can determine which scholarships best suit their programs and recruitment if total allocations are not exceeded.
The college/IGP should use a holistic review and selection process to determine awardee(s). Each college determines how these awards are allocated to its graduate programs and sets its own internal review process. The review process within the colleges for selection of applicants should follow a holistic review process that includes consideration of how the student’s proposed research interests intersect with sustainability initiatives (Section 6.1). Procedures established to distribute the EA scholarship awards to programs or to individual students at the college level are subject to the discretion of the college’s dean. Programs and colleges should maintain records of how the student’s course of study and/or professional goals intersect with sustainability. Programs and colleges are expected to rigorously evaluate students following the ENGIE-Axium guidelines and maintain records of evaluation of scholarship recipients.
College and IGP leadership should contact grad-schoolfellowships@osu.edu confirming awardees using a spreadsheet template sent in the Autumn term.
The Graduate School will verify that the student is eligible and in good standing before entering the nomination in GradAwards and approving. The programs will be notified by email within two weeks of submission of the nomination. The Graduate School will also notify the awardee. Students must accept or decline their scholarship award by April 30.
ENGIE-Axium awards cannot be deferred or reallocated. Declined and/or unused ENGIE-Axium scholarship awards will default back to the Graduate School.
