Financial Support Initiative for Faculty Pursuing Graduate and Postdoc Training Grants

The Graduate School's Strategic Training Grants (STG) team has established an initiative to provide financial support to faculty who are applying to extramural federal and private foundation training grant opportunities that support multiple graduate students and/or postdoctoral scholars.

Note that this pre-award initiative is designed to support PIs who are in the proposal development and grant submission process and is not intended to provide post-award salary support for PIs of active training grants.

Through this program, potential principal investigators can apply for salary, course, and/or other buyout time category, with approval of their department chair, for themselves or other faculty and staff who are critical to the proposal development process for the semester preceding the grant's submission deadline. The maximum amount any PI/team can request through this initiative is $15,000 (to cover up to 20% effort of the lead PI and the effort of other proposal development team members for up to 15 weeks preceding the grant’s submission deadline).

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis given the varied due dates of extramural funders in the strategic training grantmaking space. An application form (accessed through the link below) must be submitted no later than 6 months prior to the grant’s submission deadline to be considered for funding. For example, if a PI is submitting a training grant application in May 2026, they must submit the STG application no later than December 2025.

Learn more about this program, including eligibility, allowable expenses, conditions of receiving funding, and the evaluation rubric that will be used to assess applications by visiting the Training Grant Proposal Development - Faculty Time Buyout Application.

Please reach out to the STG team (gs-STGi@osu.edu) if you have any questions about this initiative.
