  • Ohio State Selected to Advance Systemic Change in Doctoral STEM Education

    The Ohio State University is one of ten U.S. universities awarded grants totaling $2.5 million from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to advance equity in doctoral STEM programs.

    Selected through a competitive nationwide search, each award recipient received a two-year, $250,000 seed grant to develop plans and begin implementation of evidence-based policies and practices to improve the recruitment, retention and graduation of a diverse community of students in physical science and engineering doctoral programs. Upon conclusion of the seed grant, pilot programs will be eligible to apply for four-year, $1.4 million implementation grants from Sloan, which include scholarship funds for students in participating departments.

    Project co-directors and co-principal investigators are Wendy Smooth, senior vice provost for inclusive excellence; Ange-Marie Hancock, executive director of the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity and ENGIE-Axium Endowed Professor of Political Science; Ayanna Howard, dean of the College of Engineering and Monte Ahuja Endowed Dean’s Chair; La’Tonia Stiner-Jones, associate dean of graduate programs in the College of Engineering; Susan Olesik, dean of natural and mathematical sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences and Distinguished University Professor; and Stephen Quaye, associate dean for excellence in graduate and postdoctoral training in the Graduate School. The SCSC at Ohio State will be administrated jointly by the Graduate School and the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity.

  • The Student Life Student Advocacy Center is seeking a Graduate Administrative Associate

    The Student Life Student Advocacy Center is seeking a Graduate Administrative Associate.  This grant funded position is available immediately and funding will expire in July 2025.  The GAA will be required to work 20 hours per week.  This position manages the administrative, assessment, and reporting activities for student emergency funds/grants administered by the Student Advocacy Center (SAC).  This position will include case management activities, as well as processing confidential financial information. The ideal candidate would be pursuing a Master’s or Doctorate degree in Higher Education, Social Work, or other social sciences and will be enrolled until July 2025.   • Seeking Nominations for the 2024 Graduate Faculty Mentor Award (GFMA)

    You might know that January is National Mentor Month, which is a great time to ask graduate students and alums to recognize the efforts of their graduate faculty mentor and nominate that faculty member for the Graduate Faculty Mentor Award (GFMA). In your nomination letter, you can share impactful mentoring stories,  describe how your mentor helped you feel a sense of belonging, was the person that empowered you to increase your future resiliency or served as the person to help you to network for future growth and employment opportunities.

    Whether you are presently a master’s or doctoral student at Ohio State University or are an alum of any of our graduate programs, nominating a graduate faculty member for the GFMA is a great way to recognize their contributions to your academic and professional development.   • New Engaged Scholars Graduate Student Community of Practice starts January 19

    The Office of Outreach and Engagement is launching a community of practice tailored exclusively for graduate students immersed in engaged scholarship. This community of practice will provide a space for graduate students to share experiences, insights and resources, and to cultivate a supportive, cross-discipline network. In this collaborative environment, we aim to foster a sense of mutual learning and shared growth. The first meeting is Jan. 19.

  • The Erdős Institute Spring 2024 enrollment is now open for students pursuing a PhD

    The Erdős Institute Spring 2024 enrollment window is now open! 

     The Erdős Institute is a multi-university collaboration that helps PhDs get rewarding jobs in industry by providing training (data science boot camps, mini-courses in topics such as data visualisation, quantum computing, UX research, etc.), career exploration seminars, one-on-one career coaching, behavioral and technical interview preparation workshops, employer and Erdős alumni career connections, and job postings.

     Admission is guaranteed and enrollment is free for all OSU graduate students, postdocs, graduate alumni, lecturers, and faculty. Individuals may create their profile and enroll here: https://www.erdosinstitute.org/spring-2024-cohort-application.
